About this Five-Video Course on Collecting Precancels:

This course was adapted from an APS Summer Seminar course presented by T.G. Rehkop and Gary Hendren and includes almost two hours of content.

  • Part 1 - History & Background:  This session discusses the history and background of precancels.  The term, "precancel" is defined and the reasons for the existence of precancels is explained.  View images of the earliest known uses.  (Video Duration:  14 minutes)
  • Part 2 - Bureau Precancels:  Session 2 focuses on bureau issues: 1917 Experimentals; 1923 Bureau Regular Production; 1978 National Bureau Print; 1980 Special Service Bureaus; and Playing Card Revenues.  View the various Bureau Types 31 - 87, plus; style types printing types, and major errors, freaks and oddities.  (Video Duration: 29 minutes)
  • Part 3 - Local Precancels:  This session shares images of local precancels during the classics period.  View markings with the "L" prefix that were used from 1893 through 1915.  (Video Duration: 35 minutes)
  • Part 4 - Silent Precancels:  Session 4 distinguishes between look alike locals and provides examples of; split cancels, line-offs, post cancels, and inverts.  Both general and specialty collecting suggestions are addressed.  A discussion of silent precancels, their types and uses features helpful images.  (Video Duration: 24 minutes)
  • Part 5 - Precanceled Envelopes and Foreign Precancels:  This session discusses the 1928 one-cent precanceled envelope, government postal cards, and the blue and amber precanceled envelopes that were discontinued in 1943, with type illustrations, envelope sizes, die illustrations and water mark designs.  View examples of foreign precancels from:  Canada, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Algeria, Tunisia, Monaco, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Turkey, and the Philippines.  (Video Duration:  12 minutes)
