About this Video:

In August 1860, three U.S. post offices began using duplex handstamps that combined postmarking and canceling elements under one handle. This innovation constitutes one of the two most important evolutionary steps that were taken with regard to U.S. 19th century cancellation practices. (The other was the advent of machine cancellations.)  This video discusses the reason for this step, shows covers relevant to the transition for each post office, and presents additional information related to early duplex handstamp usage.
