The U.S. Civil War was the result of many factors in a long process leading up to the division of the Union. As the Union divided, great changes occurred in the Post Office Departments of both the Union and the Confederacy. The North had to demonetize old stamps and issue new ones, while the South had to start from scratch, with Postmasters’ Provisionals holding forth until its first stamps were finally issued. These changes are reviewed in this program.
